In Conversation with Russ Hudson

Russ Hudson is one of the principal scholars, leading teachers and innovative thinkers in the Enneagram world today. Co-founder of The Enneagram Institute, he is the co-author of best-selling books The Wisdom of the Enneagram, Personality Types, Understanding the Enneagram and Discovering Your Personality Type.

Here we share a snippet of the conversation Siewfan Wong and Paul Chan had with Russ on shadow work. Siewfan and Paul are the organizers of The Enneagram of Shadow and Virtues with Russ Hudson in May 2019.

SW | What is Shadow?

RH | The shadow is a concept that is generally seen as coming from the psychologist Carl Jung, who was a student of Freud. Simply put, the shadow is any aspect of ourself that we’re not aware of. So the idea is that most human beings, we are aware of some things about ourself, but there’s other parts of ourself we don’t know very well. Those could be certain feelings that are suppressed, or it could be motivations that we’re not aware of. Really, the parts of us that we’re not familiar with.

Sometimes, shadow is created by difficult childhood experiences. Painful emotions, or times where we were very scared or shocked, and so we can psychologically repress those kinds of experiences, but they are still influencing us. And you can know when that kind of shadow material is coming up because it can make us do impulsive things that we would not otherwise do, kind of hard to explain.

But you know, shadow material can also be positive things. Some people aren’t necessarily aware that they are happier or their life is better than they think it is.

So basically, most serious psychology, and I see the Enneagram as involved with serious psychology, is in some sense an investigation of shadow material. What about me do I not know about? If I already knew about it then, well, I could do something about it. But the Enneagram helps us see the parts of us that we don’t usually recognise, especially in the areas of motivation as I was saying.

PC | Many people talk about shadow work in psychology. How does the enneagram help?

RH | Well, it’s part of why, I think, the Enneagram is more effective but also not as popular as some tools because the Enneagram really is explicitly looking at shadow work.

When we talk about the passion of each type [of the Enneagram] related to the sins in terms of the Christian view of it, you know, envy and avarice and pride and gluttony and all these kinds of things, or the fixated view, the Enneagram is really helping us see both emotions or motivations that we’re not aware of, but also it’s helping us see how our perspective on ourselves and life is more limited than we would usually recognise.

When we have shadow material going on, we don’t know that our view is limited. And you know most of the time, for most human beings, our view is limited somewhat.

The Enneagram is helping us see how we’re limiting it. It’s helping us see some of the underlying emotions that we might be feeling or have covered over in some way. It’s helping us see motivations we might not initially recognise that we have. Things like working very hard for success because we want our parents to love us and approve of us. Probably when we’re working we’re not conscious of that motivation. But if we were to look deeper we’ll see it’s there.

So the Enneagram helps us to see what we’re really after, what we’re seeking, and also points to maybe better ways to get the things that we’re looking for on the deepest level.

No Pain, No Gain?

We are all familiar with the saying “no pain, no gain.” This does not apply in bodywork.

Some people believe that bodywork must be painful to be effective. Perhaps they believe that by having that by having that sore back kneaded forcefully that they are getting help. Or they are used to experiencing pain in their sessions and so they think it is normal. This is not always true or necessary.

There are of course different kinds and degrees of pain. Everyone also has their own pain threshold. Generally if you cannot breathe comfortably and your whole body tenses, then this protective mode can block the session’s potential benefits. Pain is a signal of blocked energy and energy is needed for healing. Inform the practitioner if you are experiencing this level of pain. Feedback will enhance the therapist’s ability to help you.

Pain during the session can be due to various reasons, including re-experiencing former pains or from loaded emotional content around your situation. It is easy for a therapist to feel from an ego standpoint that they know what is best for the client. Bodyworker Ricardo Neuman says, “Feeling it is okay to cause pain is not something a therapist should ever be comfortable with.” Some therapists may even justify the soreness, and even bruising, by the end results. To Ricardo “this doesn’t seem like the most skillful way to work.”

While soreness will go away, destabilizing a client’s equilibrium can have a more serious and long term negative consequence. Equilibrium here doesn’t refer to physical balance, it is about your system getting to a stable place in terms of resiliency and potency. Helping a person reach an improved equilibrium in their overall system is a major goal of advanced bodywork. While structural bodywork does change physical balance, it should always be towards an easier and more functional result. If physical balance gets worse in the short term it may also make it worse in the long term, so that needs to be remedied and addressed during the session.

After a bodywork session, it is recommended that the client drink plenty of water and rest to replenish themselves and to integrate changes in their system.

The 5 Elements Approach to the Unified Field – Soul-stice Weekend Seminar.

The 5 Elements (Air “Wood”, Water, Fire, Earth & Ether “Metal”) are the building blocks of everything in creation. They hold the balance to all life.

By Intertwining the AIR: Zero Point Transmission, WATER: BreathLight Experience, FIRE: ShamanEka Somatic Movement, EARTH: Sacred Cacao Sound Medicine, and ETHER: Soul-stice White Tantra, we harmonize a unified field of resonance in our physical, emotional, sexual, psychic, and spirit bodies.

When we move through these 5 sacred elements with the ensuing seminar experiences, we can shift timelines, we can shift psycho-emotional stagnancy, we can shift “lost our purpose” feeling, we can shift dysfunctional relationships, we can shift depression, we can shift anger, we can shift stress & confusion, we can shift “things not working anymore” and we can shift anything not in personal alignment towards a huge conscious breakthrough of collective heart freedom.e move into an empty-spaciousness beyond our tricky minds, transcending the ego-personalities, forming a deeper self-love of our physical body and ultimately returning back to our core soul feelings of why we incarnated here, anchoring a loving expanded clarity in our emotional intelligence.  We come home to ourselves.

We move into an empty-spaciousness beyond our tricky minds, transcending the ego-personalities, forming a deeper self-love of our physical body and ultimately returning back to our core soul feelings of why we incarnated here, anchoring a loving expanded clarity in our emotional intelligence.  We come home to ourselves.

We come home within the space of each other.

The one thing we all have forgotten is how to “FEEL”, really feel without judgement, without fear, without comparison, without competition, without being controlled not to feel anymore.

There is immense power in our feelings. ridiculously immense. But one must clear the ego-mind and release the pent up or stagnant emotions in order to start the feeling process through beloved innocence again. It is a Return to Trans-personal Remembrance.

Over this powerful Summer Soul-stice Full Moon window, which begins a week before and lasts a week after June 20th. We have an incredible opportunity to dramatically shift these old ancient karmic cycles and move swiftly into a newer, clearer individual embodied space of true authentic feelings, align and unify our purpose together.  And we can do all of it with personal courage, truth, wisdom, compassion, understanding, love, joy and even blissful ecstasy.

The Power of Choice is always yours, I can be your Unified Field Soul-stice guide & help open the gateway but you have to walk through on your own.

Are you ready to show up now, dear friend?

Love, Mikael

Weight, Nutripuncture and Past Lives

I did 2 Past Life Regressions with Antoinette as I was interested in the subject and also to see if there were any answers to my current life challenges in the past. I had no issues building up a great rapport with Antoinette, as she is professional, genuinely caring, patient and concerned with providing a meaningful experience.

I have been struggling with weight problems most of my adult life and was able to address this issue and find the right level of determination in and after my second past life regression. I have lost 26kg since and am able to maintain the discipline to keep the weight off. This may have also been aided by the Nutripucture Therapy prescribed by Antoinette. Thank you, Antoinette, I am really grateful for all your help. You are a wonderful person and I am looking forward to continue to grow with your guidance.

Byron Katie: Getting to the REAL Question

The question “Is it true?” sometimes isn’t so easy to ask. When we have a stressful situation, sometimes there’ll be thought diarrhea angrygoing on. We might be internally fuming, ranting and raving. The thoughts think us whether or not we want to think them. The story goes on and on and on, but there is no clarity on what the real question for inquiry should be. Here are a couple of options.

Remedy 1 for past/current issues: Add the question “…. and that means that…?

For example,
Client: “I am irritated that the kids are making a lot of noise and don’t stop when I tell them to, I am fed up of having to repeat myself…..”
Facilitator: “Ok, and that means that…?
Client: “They don’t respect my authority”
Facilitator: “They don’t respect my authority, and that means that…?”
Client: “I am not important to them”
Facilitator: “I am not important to them, and that means that….?”
Client: “They don’t love me.”

Remedy 2 for future/hypothetical issues: Add the question “and what’s the worst that can happen if…?”
For example,
Client: “I am worried about angering my boss and loosing my job”.
Facilitator: “And what’s the worst that can happen if you loose your job?”
Client: “I would need to look for another job.”
Facilitator: “And what’s the worst thing that can happen if you need to look for another job?”
Client: “I can’t find one and have to rely on my parents.”
Facilitator: “And what’s the worst that can happen if you have to rely on your parents.”
Client: “It would mean that I am a failure.”
Facilitator: “I am a failure, is that true?”

In this last example there are a couple of ways to go, it just depends on whether you feel like there’s more to go, or “I am a failure” is the core issue.

Another point here is that repeating the statement helps to keep the focus zoomed in on the what needs to be addressed.

Hope this helps. More later on when there are only feelings or sensations and you can’t pin down a thought.
