Stress may have gotten a bad rep; it’s not a bad thing. Stress becomes a problem when it is chronic, negatively affects the quality of life, or has become a trauma or the extension of prolonged stress.
We think of trauma as shocking life-threatening events – accidents, bodily harm, physical and sexual abuse, surgeries or being in a war or disaster zone. Trauma is also any situation that is ongoing – financial hardship, relationship problems, mental anguish… We are each different and what determines if an event is traumatic to us is our own resilience.
The problem is we habituate to stressful conditions, which deplete us over time leading to burnout or serious illness. We may get a massage or go to the movie to take our mind off. However the stress still lives within us. To release stress, we require a neurogenic solution, not a mental approach. This is how Tension & Trauma Release Exercises (TRE) work. They trigger the natural shaking that we see in animals after they encounter a threat. Because of our sedentary lifestyle and cultural programming, we are taught not to shake or cry and to “suck it up”. The shaking that comes from TRE come from the nervous system.
