The Enneagram and The Work of Byron Katie: The Map and The Way of Awakening to Our True Nature

10 August , 2012 - 12 August , 2012

Discover the peace, freedom, and creativity that is our true nature with the profound map of human consciousness, the Enneagram and the simple and powerful method of inquiry and awakening, The Work of Byron Katie.

The Riso/Hudson Enneagram is a map of human consciousness that describes with striking clarity how our mental fixations and unquestioned thoughts drive emotional reactions and body tensions that keep us trapped in our stories and patterns of the past. The Enneagram also describes integration and awakening to the essential qualities that shine and manifest when we become more present and free from our stories and fixations.

Byron Katie explains The Work as “a way of identifying and questioning the thoughts that cause all the fear, violence, depression, frustration, and suffering in the world. Experience the happiness of undoing those thoughts through The Work, and allow your mind to return to its true, awakened, peaceful, creative nature.”

The map of the Enneagram is a tremendous aid for the inquiry of The Work. It helps us identify and understand the stressful patterns of our personality type as well as the essential qualities that emerge when we become more present. And the inquiry of The Work of Byron Katie gives us real internal recognition and awakening to the reality of our own consciousness that the map of the Enneagram describes so well. The Enneagram tells us “Why” we are the way we are and The Work actually shows us “How” to Work directly with our personality’s stressful thoughts and limiting stories and awaken to our true nature.

In the spirit of inquiry this workshop is open to all. No previous experience with The Work of Byron Katie or the Enneagram is required. And if you have experience with The Work of Byron Katie, the Enneagram will deeply enrich your understanding and experience of inquiry. And if you have studied the Enneagram, The Work of Byron Katie will give you a powerful way to identify your stressful stories and discover your own awakened heart free from any story.

An introductory Enneagram class (DeepDive Enneagram Workshop: Know Thyself) held 22 – 24 June at Gallery Helios will give new students a taste of the Enneagram framework to better benefit from this workshop.

On Friday evening we will explore the map of the Enneagram which shows us the mechanisms that keep us limited by our personality and reveals how the essential reality of our true nature is always present when we notice. The Enneagram will also give us an orientation for inquiry: present and relaxed in the body, an open heart that is kind and accepting of emotions just as they are and an open mind aware of thoughts and how they affect our experience.

Then on Sat. and Sun. we will dive into inquiry, into the reality of our own experience with The Work of Byron Katie. You will have the opportunity to identify the places in your thinking where you are stuck, stressed, or suffering and then through inquiry with The Work, “turn it around” to experience the abundance of life in reality – beyond the limits of your stressful thoughts and stories.

As we do The Work, and question our fixations and stressful thoughts, our attachment to them unravels and lets go. The result is relaxation, fearlessness, joy, creativity and peace. The Work is so simple that a child can do it, and so powerful that even those who have never done any kind of inquiry or inner work report that they experience a level of peace, clarity and compassion that they had never imagined could be possible. Those who learn and practice the Work experience healing in their relationships, contentment and creativity in their working lives, and a new level of peace and awakening in their spiritual path.

“Life on the other side of inquiry is so simple and obvious that it can’t be imagined before hand… there is such abundance here, now, always.”
—Byron Katie
